"We make it possible" and they really do!
Dear Yvonne,
As a wheelchair-user, I was not certain how I could experience a safari during my recent visit to Kenya. I was connected with Go Africa Safaris, who often work with disabled people. In preparation for our trip, one of the owners , Yvonne, emailed with me regularly, answered all my questions, and made all the arrangements at safari camps as well as a stay at the beach.
Given their commitment to inclusion, Go Africa Safaris regularly advocates for accessibility at all of the safari camps and booked our accommodations at camps and hotels of which they are certain offer a reasonable level of accessibility. The rooms had no stairs, ample space in the bathrooms, and the grounds were generally flat and easy to navigate. They also provided me a portable shower seat that I could use at each site.
Their van is equipped with a ramp so that someone could stay in their chair. All the windows in the vehicle open, so you can see the animals and landscape easily from any seat. The driver was extremely knowledgeable - we learned so much from him! And, he was always patient with any access needs. He also knew which rest stops had accessible bathrooms when driving from one camp to the next and timed the rides so we did not go too long between stops. Our five-day safari was incredible.Yvonne even texted me on my birthday!
Access outside of the US can be challenging and, in many places around the world, even nonexistent. Go Africa Safaris is committed to disability inclusion and the team was amazingly helpful in facilitating a safari that was as accessible as it could be. Their tagline is, "We make it possible" and they really do!
